Ladies – what outerwear should you select for your job interviewMany organisations commonly dress down and jeans and casual wear is acceptable on a day-to-day basis.  However you are trying to ensure that your first impression is better than those competing for the same job so as a general guide look to wear a neat combination of blouse and skirt.   If you are plus size then stick to darker colors and away from vibrant large patterns – you are not auditioning to be a set of sixties floral curtains!  Stripes will work and be flattering if they are vertical – steer clear of horizontal stripes

Tights or stockingsApparently sales of pantyhose and stockings has been dropping over the past few years as more women choose not to have their legs covered.  If you do wear a skirt for your job interview as recommended then it is essential to wear nylon stockings or pantyhose.  Pantyhose or stockings will finish your outfit and flatter your legs as well, hiding any blemishes and giving an ‘artificial tan’ to pale legs.  Keep the look restrained – neutral to dark shades, and avoid vibrant colors or patterns.

Choosing lingerie for your job interviewNo, this is not a joke, lingerie can make a difference.  If you feel your underwear fits well, and looks good (even though you’re the only one to know), then you will behave more confidently.

OuterwearAs already mentioned, you will need to decide on an appropriate outfit in relation to the type of job for which you are.  Aim for simple elegance; you do not want to appear sloppy to a prospective employer.  However it is not a good move to make your interviewer feel you are significantly better dressed than they are!  A smart suit, ideally with a skirt and not pants.  Yes we are in the twenty first century, but some employers are old-fashioned!  If you don’t like the advice, ask yourself how badly you really want the job?  If wearing a skirt gives you a fractional edge over another interviewee then it will have been worth the effort.

PerfumeI’d recommend minimal perfume.  A scent which you may like might be overpowering to someone else if they happen to have a really keen sense of smell, and some people are actually allergic to certain perfumes and smells.  Less is certainly more in this instance.

NailsClean nails are of course essential, and natural varnish or a restrained color is your best bet.  There are very few occupations where the possession of long talons will either impress or be an asset; they can result in the wrong keys being hit on keyboards, and in a health care environment for example they can even be a health hazard. Short and neat is best.

Body language at an interviewBody language is very powerful, and you can these tricks to get the interviewer on your side without them even being aware of it. 

A firm handshake, whilst looking the interviewer in the eye with a natural confident smile will instantly put you ahead of the pack.

Subtly mirror the posture of your interviewer and they will instantly warm to you…and not be aware why!  On the other hand sitting with arms tightly folder is a very contained, shy posture and will give off the wrong signals.

Finally, make sure you’ve done your homework on the company before you attend.  Asking one or two intelligent questions that shows that you have an awareness of the business always creates a good impression.

Heel height should be about 5 centimetres. More than that and you might begin to feel wobbly. You don’t want to catch a man’s attention as you stumble and fall. It can not only be embarrassing, it can be very uncomfortable.

Thickness is another aspect of high heels that can effect comfort. Thicker is not always better and the trend for thick heels comes and goes. How to wear heels
Before leaving home for a night out, practice wearing your high heels by walking around your home. Keep your legs straight and close together. Point your toes in front of you. Start off with slow, short steps, placing your heel down first then rolling onto the flat of your foot, the ball then your toes.

As you become more comfortable with your high heel or platform shoes, practice on various surfaces, like carpet and wood floors. Don’t forget to work on stops, turns and even slow dancing.

The earliest known shoes date from about 8000 to 7000 BCE and were found in Oregon, USA in 1938[1]. However, the materials used for making shoes do not normally last for thousands of years, so shoes were probably in use long before this. Physical anthropologist Erik Trinkaus believes he has found evidence that the use of shoes began in the period between about 40,000 and 26,000 years ago, based on the fact that the thickness of the bones of the toes (other than the big toe) decreased during this period, on the premise that going barefoot results in greater bone growth before this period.[1]

The insole is the interior bottom of a shoe, which sits directly beneath the foot. Many shoes have removable and replaceable insoles, and extra insoles are often added for comfort or health reasons (to control the shape, moisture, or smell of the shoe).

The outsole is the layer in direct contact with the ground. Dress shoes have leather outsoles; casual or work-oriented shoes have outsoles made of natural rubber or a synthetic imitation. The outsole may comprise a single piece, or may comprise separate pieces of different materials. Often the heel of the sole is rubber for durability and traction, while the front is leather for style. Specialized shoes will often have modifications on this design: athletic cleats have spikes embedded in the outsole to grip the ground; many kinds of dancing shoes have much softer or harder soles.

The layer in between the outsole and the insole that is typically there for shock absorption. Some types of shoes, like running shoes, have another material for shock absorption, usually beneath the heel where one puts the most pressure down. Different companies use different materials for the midsoles of their shoes. Some shoes may not have a midsole at all.

Dress shoes are categorized by smooth and supple leather uppers, leather soles, and narrow sleek figure. Casual shoes are characterized by sturdy leather uppers, non-leather outsoles, and wide profile.

Some designs of dress shoes can be worn by either gender. The majority of dress shoes have an upper covering, commonly made of leather, enclosing most of the lower foot, but not covering the ankles. This upper part of the shoe is often made without apertures or openings, but may also be made with openings or even itself consist of a series of straps, e.g. an open toe featured in women’s shoes. Shoes with uppers made high to cover the ankles are also available; a shoe with the upper rising above the ankle is usually considered a boot but certain styles may be referred to as high-topped shoes or high-tops. Usually, a high-topped shoe is secured by laces or zippers, although some styles have elastic inserts to ease slipping the shoe on.

Leave Room for Shoes

Make sure your shoes match and complement the color and the design of your dress and the shape of your foot. Some girls do not have a problem with foregoing comfort for fashion, especially if it comes down to a choice between the perfect pair of shoes and a pair that are just not as nice. However, you can have both, easily.  The worst thing you can do on the night is to cripple yourself and not be able to dance the night away with your friends, or worse have to kick off your shoes just so that you can walk.  A pair of amazing shoes is one thing, spoiling your look is quite another.

High heels are always first choice because they make legs longer and slimmer and they also contribute to your look by forcing you to keep an upright posture. However, there are comfortable heels and there are ridiculous heels too and unless you are used to wearing six inch heels, stay away from them on the night.  A two inch heel is quite adequate while giving your legs the look you want, you will also be able to save your feet unnecessary hardship.

Heeled shoes come in a variety of options, from the most popular strappy sandal to the enclosed toe shoe.  While sandals are pretty and look fantastic on manicured feet, they can be hard to wear all night because they don’t give a lot of support while dancing.  If you opt for the more comfortable enclosed toe, make sure it has a soft cushion lining so they won’t end up you giving your toes a blister.

Ballet shoes while extremely comfortable do not enhance many prom gowns.  They are better suited to full skirts and generally do not look good with tight fitting dresses.  So if you are going to go this route, make sure the style of your gown is suitable.

Something which should be fundamental is that your shoes be the correct size for your feet.  Too large and they might fly off and embarrass you, too tight and you will live to regret it later on that night. Wear your shoes in before the prom.  Wear them at home for an hour a night so that you get used to how they feel and get used to them, and if the soles are made of leather it will give you the chance to rough them up a little so that you don’t slip or skid on the dance floor.
